Ethiopian culture

                                        Ethiopian culture

Ethiopia is a beautiful land; it is a country with a culture and traditions for more than 4,000 years. Ethiopia is like many other African countries that has multiple religions and languages. The languages spoken in Ethiopia falling into four groups with more than 150 different dialects; the first group and the one that hooked me and my interest and attention is my best friends group. My best friend name is Elsa and she came from Amhara and she said, “My great group accounts about 19.8 million people, Oroma are bigger than that which is estimated about 25.5 million also there is Tigre and Somali.” The main language spoken in the central part of the country is Amharic; other main languages are Tigrigna, Guraginya, Afan Oromo, Somalinya, Gumuz and Anuak. Nationalities estimated to around 80 million. The religion in Ethiopia is Islamic and Christianity. Knowing the groups takes us to learn about the group which most grow the Tef, the main dish in Ethiopia the Amharic. From an Amharic woman I learned.
I love the Ethiopian food and especially the main dish that became very popular in the U.S.A and especially in the areas where Ethiopian people gathered and it is the Injera. One of My favorite restaurants is the Blue Nile Ethiopian restaurant that is located near the corner of Lake Street and Lyndale Avenue in Minneapolis, that restaurant makes the best Injera dish. Injera is made from cereal grain that is unique and known as Tef. All Ethiopian people eat Tef Ingera as main dish according to Elsa. She said, “Tef is containing variety of healthy nutrition’s vitamins and minerals like Iron, calcium, potassium and other grains.” When I go to this restaurant with my friend I always order Injera and I eat it in their house as well. Elsa’s mother made Injera at home and save them Dollars, she said, “ my mother helped me a lot with everything I saved a lot of money by keeping my kids home with her and I also saved money from getting Injera from outside. My mother poured that batter in the oven to cook after it sits so the yeast can become active” and that how Injera made. When I ask her questions about her country and its tradition, I feel like I am in Ethiopia the way she describes the streets and the markets in her country plus the smell of the food makes me feel like I am in that world, the spicy food with the description of the hot weather makes me feel worm. Elsa holds a big love in her heart for her country she almost always cries when she talks about it. It’s the place where she and 4 of her siblings grew up she drank from the Ethiopia’s water she breathe its air and she lived in that land for so long. She came to U.S.A 10 years ago and finally she was able to bring her mother, father and her sister. Elsa is the one who made this culture lovable to me. From the languages and the food to the clothes.
Women in Ethiopia wear the traditional Habesha qemis which takes 2 to 3 weeks to sew. Men wear shirts that are a knee length with pants they also wear long socks that goes up to the knee in the other hand women may not wear socks at all. Instead they cover their head with a shash. Shash is a cloth that tied at the neck. Among Muslim and Christian women this fabric is common. Old women wear the shash every day but other female ages wear it when attending church.
I can’t wait until its April 24; I am going to Elsa’s house to celebrate with them the orthodox Easter all her family, relatives, and friends are coming. I will connect all the culture pictures to the people and what they do in a great holyday like this.

Reader's Journal Continued, Part II

Chapter 12 Page 100
We must have been walking for days, I do not really remember, when suddenly two men put us at gunpoint and motioned, with their guns, for us to come closer .We walked in between two rows of men carrying machine guns,AK-47s,G3s, and RPGs .Their face were dark, as if they had bathed them in Charcoal, and they started intensely at us with their extremely red eyes.
After reading this passage several times I found myself stuck out; to me I found walking between men who have dark faces and who are holding guns that pointing to me would be so scary, I put myself in their position and it feels terrible and it sounds like action and scary movies. Growing up in a country like Africa I used to hear about this kind of scary people who point out guns on other peoples face every day that why this passage hooked my attention.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Using Cell Phones

Advantages and Disadvantages of Using Cell Phones

In Past decades, people used letters to communicate Until the 1800s; but this way was very convenient, because letters get lost or delivered late and people couldn’t contact with each other in emergency situations, but after the invention of the telephone in 1876 by Alexander Graham Bell; it became easier for people to communicate. Technology improves our society.  It has allowed us to travel great distance by plane, save lives with medical technology advancement, and allowed access to the informational highway with just a click of the mouse. One advance of technology that has rocketed in the past ten years is the availability of cell phones. According to study, “In the U.S., more than 190 million people used cell phones as of June 2005, compared to only 4.3 million in 1990.” Cell phones are having a great influence in our live and are very convenient to keep with us. Cell phones are a faster and an easy way to transfer and receive information However; cell phones have negative effects on our life.
Some of the great influence, cell phones are allowing people to stay connected wherever they go and whenever they want. While it’s true that it’s easier to keep in touch with friends, family, and with who’s ever important in someone’s life. It’s also easier to keep in touch with them in a long distance. Cell phone service has revolutionized long distance calling and made long distance charges almost a thing of the past. Even land line long distance is often free for so many minutes. People have declined land lines completely at times in favor of cell phones because of the good long distance minutes especially for people who lives far away from their family.
For business people, the advantages are being able to contact the partners and customers who are important in all situations, even if one of them is outside the work.  They can solve their problems at any time, although some associates who do not like this way might call that a disadvantage, too.  Besides the benefits of the latest technology to users, cell phones also tend to play an essential role in helping dealing with crimes. “As more people communicate on cell phones with video and pictures we could very well see a decrease in crime. Criminals will realize they may be caught on phone if they attempt any criminal activities because of the prevalence of these camera phones.” Says Brian Lee So, Cell phones play an important role to help in a difficult situation like this.
Furthermore, cell phones are not just for calling, they also include messaging, video, songs, games, alarm clock, notes, calendar, and reminder, so it is a one device that has different uses. Cell phone can be use as a record evidence for police investigation. For example, accidents get reported to 911 rapidly, traffic updates occur more often because citizens call and report back ups, and drivers who need to be taken off the road because of  being intoxicated or just plain reckless will be located quicker and easier. Perhaps the greatest benefit owning a cell phone is the security, people know that they can call for assistance anytime or anywhere they need, too. In the past, millions of people were stranded on the side of the road in the middle of nowhere and no one around because their car broke down. Not being able to get help, and having to rely on the kindness of strangers who passed by. It was not only frustrating but dangerous as well. Moreover, kids who are in age of 13 and over should have cell phone because if ever they need help, only a phone call away specially, teens who are driving in late time. Sometimes they get in trouble such as car accident, run out of gas, and break down.  According to Robert, “Cell phones seem to be a great security feature for the parents. They can now be 'connected' to their children 24 hours a day, 7 days week, and 365 days a year. And of course, it allows the child to dial 911 if an emergency arises, now with the GPS Location Sensitivity feature; your child will be located during that emergency with ten feet of the phones location.” In the other hand, one of the cell phones advantage, cell phone is not only helpful for adults but also for high school student. According to Kristina, “Should cell phones be allowed in school? The simple answer is yes, but with limitation.” Kristina talked about how cell phone is important for students in many ways one of them, student could share notes when miss class or ever share an important event at school with their parents if they could not make it to their children school for any reason so they could send them pictures or a life videos, at the same times they have to make sure to educate them in how and when to use it. Also parents, students, and teachers have to agree that it’s important to have a limitation of using it at school.

Generating Ideas for Persuasive Research Essay

In your journal make a quick list of issues that have provoked disagreement between groups of people in your hometown or local community.
How to be Happy?
Students punched in school
Cell phones are important for teenagers

Make a quick list of issues that have provoked disagreements on your college campus, and between groups of people in your home state.
Drinking is not allowed
Parking for hand cap
How students say their opinion free?

Think about issues—local, statewide, regional, national—that have touched your life or could affect you in some way in the following areas:  environmental, health care, civil rights, business, education, crime or sports.  Make a quick list of questions within these areas you wonder about.  For example, Will I be able to afford to send my children to college in twelve years?

How I improve my English?
How people leave without war?
How economic is be good?

My Experience Writing

My Experience Writing
In the begging when we first start writing. I thought it is going to be a very hard work, but when I started to think about the topics. I said to myself that most of them are from my real life. Whenever I pick my work book to write I feel so happy because the topic makes my  remember my past, my present, and even to think about my future. Writing is not an easy thing, but if the Pearson thinks about it from the good way it is very easy enjoyable things for me. I believe that everyone has his or her own favorite things to do, as some people like to read, some like to drown and some like to write. Writing one of my favorite thing to do since I was a little girl .I used to have my own book that I wrote whatever action happen to me...Finally, I would to say this experience with writing that gave me opportunity to talk about some of my life planes also want to say for the people who don’t like writing to give them self chance to try writing because that may be the best way for saving and remember many things in their life.

Alternative Assigment

On Saturday, I attended Balls at the Southern Theater in Minneapolis with my husband to observe some new talents in the area. When I was child, one of my dreams was to present something in a theater type of an environment. I choice to go there because it gives people a good chance of becoming known by do whatever they want. Balls is considered one of the longest running open-mic in the Twin Cities. It is nice a place and people come to it from different place to watch and judge. I like the event, because it’s similar to my favorite show “America’s Got Talent” and is presented in a similar format.
We arrived at the Balls at 11:45pm, as the show starts at midnight. The show was so funny and mixed with comedy, song, and other shows. In the show I attended, each presenter was given around 5 to 7 minutes to do whatever they wanted. I watched different people with different talents and some that did not have it at all. The first show started with one guy who sung like Michael Jackson. He has a nice voice and made me enjoy his show. He really sounded like Michael. After that, a woman had a horrible voice and she was trying to make jokes during her performances. It was so bad and the audience booed her out. I learned about different performer’s talents and their characteristic in the twin cities. Overall, it was interesting and we enjoyed most of our time there.

Explode A moment

After the difficult moment in my parents’ life my mother started to think about her children and their future and her sacrifices started from here. I was the older child and I was so close to her and I watched her surviving the difficult moment that she went through with my father after he lost his business. She started to go out and search for a job for days and days because my father was shocked after what happened. the news about losing all the money he saved for life in the business that he mad was so hard for him and immediately he lost his vision. My mother turn in life began she became the mother and the father at the same time.  I will never forget how hard she worked; she worked outside the hose and inside. She gets my father needs before she leave the house for the job that she found. She found a job as a waiter in a small restaurant. It was a small neighborhood restaurant. The owner of the restaurant knew the situation that she is going through and she explained to him that she could not leave me and my baby brother at home with my father because of his illness. She used to wrap my brother in her waist and serve the customers and I would be following them everywhere. The money that he paid to her was not enough for her family so she decided to make food at home and sell it for people, so the money she got paid in her job she buys what she needs for the food that she makes for people at home. My mother was the best cooker in the neighborhood she made the famous Sudanese dishes, she backed the bread at home. At that time I was 6years and I was supposed to start school. She wanted me to inter the school because she never had the chance to finish it. She wanted the best for her children.

A call to Adventure

“Adventure” Assignment

  Mall of America Adventure
When I came to America five years ago, one of the places that fascinated me the most was Mall of America. We have many malls back home, but we have nothing like the Mall of America, which is one of the biggest Malls in the world. When I visited the mall, I thought it was the most wonderful place that I have ever seen. My husband told me about the underwater aquarium that is located in the basement of the mall. Since that time, I have always wanted to see it. I never had the chance, because I am always busy with school, the children, or something. I did not have the time to discover it! About a week ago, we had a school break and my husband had some time off from his work, so we thought to do something different. I came up with the idea of going to the MOA Underwater Adventure. He liked the idea, but since he saw it before, he was not as excited as I was. We argued if the children are going to enjoy it! After that, we agreed to go since there wasn’t anything else to do in this cold freezing weather.
When the adventure has started, we sew fishes of all kinds including turtles and many other things sea creatures from the real underwater life. The most amazing thing was the sharks. I have never imagined seeing a shark swimming this close and felt almost next to me. Of course, we were separated by a thick glass. My children really enjoyed it a lot. My daughter was very excited for seeing Nemo, a cartoon character, in real life. We have also enjoyed some ice cream, and the children played with some of the mall rides and games.
A lot of people may think that Mall of America is only a mall to shop, I disagree. This experience at the mall aquarium proved it to me. It’s actually a nice place to see different things and spend some good time while taking shelter from the cold weather during winter in Minnesota.

FIRST BLOG JOURNAL

In the begging when I first start writing I thought it is going to be Avery hard work, but when I started to think about the topics I said to myself that most of them are from my real life. Whenever I pick my work book to writ I feel so happy because the topic makes me remembered my past my present and even to think about my future. Witting is not an easy thing, but if the person think about it from the good way it is very enjoyable things for me. I believe that everyone has his or her own favorite things to do. Such as, some people like to read and some like to write. Witting was one of my favorite thing to do since I was a little girl. I used to have my own daily book that I wrote whatever actions happened to me. I remembered the worst action that happened and I could not write a lot about that action was when my mother died. Finally, I want to say that this writing experience give me the opportunity to talk about some of my life planes.
My First School:
In Jun, 6, 2006, I came to the USA. When I arrived to the U.S I did not speak English well. But I know some words and understand a little. In my country Sudan the English is scanned language so all schools study it. In the U.S.A I have to speak English well because the first language. So I registered in the public school. I remembered in my first day I walk up early and I woke my baby up too. That day was really exciting I was really happy in this program. When we were there we saw a lot of students from a different country. I remembered  when the teacher come ,she introduced my me to the students because I was so nerves and I can to say anything I was really like the first day in the school
Typical Day:
Writing is my every day of my life. For example, most of the time I sent email to my family  back home Sudan  to make sure everything is ok, I write down my home work, and I take notes for my daily planes.
Successful Writing:
My successful writing that I wrote was in my class last semester.  I wrote about how many victims from Propaganda Techniques every day. I did my best until I finish from it and I used many different examples for that paper. Finally, I got good grad.
